Welcome Reception Held Ahead of Inaugural Kyoto Conference; Prof. Fukuoka Moderates Talk Event

A reception to welcome speakers and participants to the Inaugural Kyoto Conference—Toward the Realization of a Multilayered Society of Values— (hosted by the Kyoto Institute of Philosophy, co-hosted by Kyoto University, and supported by the Japan Business Federation (Keidanren), Japan Association of Corporate Executives (Keizai Doyukai), the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Kyoto Prefecture, and Kyoto City) was held on the evening of September 22 at the Prince Hall in The Prince Kyoto Takaragaike hotel in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto. Approximately 200 people from Japan and abroad were in attendance and deepened their relationships while enjoying dinner together before the conference, which will open tomorrow, September 23.

At the reception, Jun Sawada, Executive Chairman of NTT, Inc. and a co-chairperson of the institute, gave a greeting, saying, "I am very excited to encounter various insights through the whole range of discussions." This was followed by a talk event titled "Thinking About a Multilayered Society of Values from Kyoto," moderated by Shinichi Fukuoka, a biologist and professor at Aoyama Gakuin University.

In addition to Professor Fukuoka, the speakers included Seigen Mori, Director of Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto; Rukmini Bhaya Nair, Honorary Professor of Linguistics and English, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi; Giovanni Cesare Pagazzi, Archbishop (Titular of Belcastro), Archivist and Librarian of the Holy Roman Church; and Yasuo Deguchi, professor at Kyoto University and the other co-chairperson of the Institute. They exchanged opinions with humor, based on their respective religious values and academic insights.
