The Hitachi Kyoto University Laboratory is a joint research organization established in 2016 by Hitachi, Ltd., a board member company of our institute, and Kyoto University. Hitachi researchers and Kyoto University professors and students continue to work together toward "New social innovation."

The symposium has been held since its initial launch in the same year, and annually since 2020. This year's theme was "Social Implementation of New Values." In addition to Hitachi, Hakuhodo, NTT, and SMBC Group, each conducting joint research with Kyoto University, reported on research results and challenges from a corporate perspective, with 258 people attending, including those participating online.

Professor Deguchi gave his lecture prior to the reports from the various companies. He presented the view that the 21st century is the "Century of Values" and, speaking about the 20th century as an antithesis, stated: "It was believed that as science and technology developed and ideal economic systems were built, people would become happier, society would improve, and wars would disappear. However, the current reality is the exact opposite." He then explained the role of the institute, which was established in this "Century of Values," emphasizing that "there are diverse options for values. Our job is to verbalize them and lay them out on the table like cards."

He also pointed out, "Looking at individuals, a single company, or a single university, different and sometimes conflicting values are actually mixed together, existing while embracing clear differences within. Isn't that the fundamental nature of our identity?" He stated that sharing such awareness would be a step toward a "Multilayered Society of Values."
