Prof. Deguchi speaks at Osaka-Kansai Expo about humans, science

A panel discussion on science, technology, and the future was held at the Switzerland Pavilion at the Osaka-Kansai Expo on April 18th. Professor Yasuo Deguchi from Kyoto University, who serves as Co-Chairperson of the Kyoto Institute of Philosophy (KIP), spoke about humans and science from a philosophical perspective. The event was organized by the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator Foundation (GESDA), a Swiss government-affiliated organization, and it also served to deepen the relationship and collaboration between KIP and GESDA.

The Switzerland Pavilion at the Osaka-Kansai Expo is a venue where visitors can experience the country's scientific and technological innovations through AR (Augmented Reality) and other means, while contemplating humans, life, and the planet. GESDA provides the "Geneva Public Portal to Anticipation" corner, which is positioned as a core element of the exhibition. Professor Deguchi was invited as the only Japanese guest for this event, following his meeting with GESDA executives during his visit to Switzerland in March of this year, where they promised future collaboration.

The panel discussion, held in a special venue on the third floor of the Switzerland Pavilion, was moderated by Niniane Paeffgen, Program Lead of the Geneva Public Portal to Anticipation. The panel included Professor Deguchi, Professor Sarah Kenderdine from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, who researches immersive visualization technologies (Plus, the designer of Geneva Public Portal to Anticipation), and Project Professor Roumiana Tsenkova from Kobe University, renowned for her research on "water" as the source of life.

When Ms. Paeffgen asked, "What do you think about the possibility of humans and AI co-creating the future?", Professor Deguchi emphasized, "The ideal relationship between humans and AI is not a 'service-recipient' relationship where AI serves unilaterally for human benefit." He then proposed a "Fellowship Model" that positions artificial entities, including AI and robots, as equal partners with whom we build harmonious relationships. The audience of about 60 people listened attentively, nodding in agreement.

After the closing, a cocktail party was also held at the same venue, where Professor Deguchi and Dr. Maiko Tsuji, a research fellow from the institute, deepened their friendship with GESDA board member Henrietta Fore, former Executive Director of UNICEF, and others.
