Leading institute members promote mission in India

Three key figures of the Kyoto Institute of Philosophy, Professor Yasuo Deguchi of Kyoto University and Chairman Jun Sawada of NTT, who serve as Co-Chairpersons of the institute, and Professor Markus Gabriel of the University of Bonn in Germany, our Senior Global Advisor, visited India from February 26 to March 3. The main purpose of the visit was to promote the institute’s philosophy and activities in India, a country whose growing influence is propelled by its newly crowned status as the world’s most populous nation and its remarkable economic growth, and to cultivate new avenues for international academic exchange.

On February 27, we hosted a networking event at a hotel in New Delhi, inviting 18 researchers in fields such as philosophy, linguistics, and political science. Among them were Professor Rukmini Bhaya Nair (Indian Institute of Technology Delhi) and Professor Madhurika Banarjee (University of Delhi). Chairman Sawada and Professor Gabriel gave presentations on the founding principles and background of the institute, as well as the global network it has built in the roughly year and a half since its establishment. This was followed by a Q&A session that included Professor Deguchi.

Numerous questions were raised, leading to lively discussions on topics such as the “Multilayered Society of Values” the institute aims to realize, and the philosophical implications of the “WE-turn” concept proposed by Professor Deguchi. Many participants, particularly those researching AI ethics, expressed strong support for the institute’s core message, which originated from NTT's development of the next-generation communication infrastructure "IOWN" (Innovative Optical and Wireless Network). — namely, that “a new technology requires a new philosophy.”

Afterward, a reception party brought together 26 participants, including researchers from the institute and the University of Bonn, in a warm, convivial atmosphere. Attendees also discussed possibilities for future collaborations, including joint research projects and other events.
