Kyoto Institute of Philosophy Exchanges Views on ‘Kyoto Declaration’ with Prof. Edward Freeman
The Kyoto Institute of Philosophy (KIP) welcomed Professor Edward Freeman of the University of Virginia to Kyoto University in Kyoto for an exchange of views on the “Kyoto Declaration,” to be presented at next year’s Kyoto Conference, and the accompanying “Recommendations for Industry,” on July 5. The 90-minute meeting featured a productive discussion on the relationship between philosophy and business.

Professor Freeman is a pioneer of stakeholder theory and a world-renowned authority on business ethics and management philosophy. He attended the first Kyoto Conference, held last September, where he participated as a panelist in a lunch session titled “Technological Transformation and the Future of the Corporation.” He is also scheduled to attend the second Kyoto Conference next July.
The meeting on July 5 was held in private. KIP was represented by Professor Yasuo Deguchi of Kyoto University and Jun Sawada, Executive Chairman of NTT, both of whom serve as Co-Chairpersons of KIP, as well as Ryosuke Igarashi, Senior Research Manager; Shunichi Takagi, Research Manager; and Samuel Mortimer, Research Fellow. Professor Asli Colpan of Kyoto University, who attended the first Kyoto Conference, was also present.
Following the meeting, Professor Freeman commented, “I hope that the Kyoto Declaration has an impact that makes business better, that reinvents capitalism as a system that’s fit for human beings and fit for our children.”
