Kyoto University Professor Yasuo Deguchi, Co-Chairperson of the Institute; University of Bonn Professor Markus Gabriel, Senior Global Advisor to the Institute; and KIP Senior Research Manager Ryosuke Igarashi were joined by KIP Co-Chairperson and NTT Chairman Jun Sawada for a courtesy call on University of Helsinki Rector Sari Lindblom. The Rector noted that a foundational technique in modern AI was originally developed at the University of Helsinki in the 1970s, highlighting the university's longstanding commitment to AI research. She expressed strong interest in deepening the university’s relationship with KIP.
A roundtable with Helsinki researchers followed, bringing together specialists in the philosophy of AI, AI ethics, and AI law. Professor Deguchi introduced the WE-turn philosophical framework, while Professor Gabriel outlined KIP's vision for international collaboration from the perspective of New Realism. The discussions revealed points of convergence with Helsinki's research on how collective intentions and actions come about, as well as on the ethical and legal dimensions of AI.
Helsinki participants expressed enthusiasm for contributing to a special issue of an international journal and exploring joint research, signaling the addition of a new Nordic academic node to KIP's growing global network.
